South San Diego Bay is an important part of the Pacific Flyway. Major flyways are used by birds during the changing seasons flying long distances. This region of San Diego Bay has been the home of Native Americans living in balance with bay ecology, among coastal estuaries, which were rich in both food and items for daily living.
Wildlife Protected Areas should always be approached with care. Never venture unto the land in any protected area. Typical of south San Diego Bay are salt marshes, mudflats, ponds, shallow water channels and salt flats. The San Diego National Wildlife Refuge includes a salt works operating since 1873. The Sweetwater Marsh Refuge is located nearby and is best viewed from the Chula Vista Nature Center. The Nature Center is a educational living museum with many programs and exhibits.
